Al Jazeera Just Bought Al Gore’s TV Station

Nice Move

From The New York Times:

Al Jazeera on Wednesday completed a deal to take over Current TV, the low-rated cable channel that was founded by Al Gore and his business partners seven years ago.

No real commentary here other than, “this is hilarious.” Current TV was an obscenely partisan dumpster fire. It was an entire channel that seemed to be founded on the belief that Al Gore’s mildly successful, theatrically released global warming slideshow proved he knew how to create compelling content, and that people actually liked watching Keith Olbermann, one of America’s top five most punchable faces. So in other words, it was the final product of a lot of bad ideas.

It looks like Al Jazeera is going to try and make a legitimate international news source for American viewers out of the channel.

“Al Jazeera is planning to invest significantly in building ‘Al Jazeera America,’ a network focused on international news for the American audience,” the Current chief executive Joel Hyatt said in an e-mail to staffers on Wednesday evening. Referring to Mr. Gore, he said, “Al and I will both serve on the advisory board of Al Jazeera America, and we look forward to helping build an important news network.”

Now, Al Jazeera may be a deplorable, terrorist sympathizing news outlet, but hey, at least they won’t be putting Keith Olbermann back on TV, amiright?
