I’ve heard of some weird DUIs throughout the years, ranging from people getting pulled over in golf carts to lawn mowers. However, I had never heard of anyone getting a DUI while operating a motorized ice chest.
One Australian man helped change that on Friday. He was busted riding his “esky” (Australian for portable ice chest) down a bike path next to a hotel where police were stationed for a separate event. He was pulled over around 4:45 p.m. when officers discovered a treasure trove of alcohol in his ice chest. Under the lid, they found “10 tallies of beer, two bags of cask wine, and up to six cans of bourbon.” While I have no idea what “tallies of beer” means, I would imagine that it is a decent amount for one person. The man then sealed his fate by blowing upwards of six times the legal limit.
The man was charged with multiple offenses, including driving while under the influence of liquor, driving while unlicensed, and driving an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle.
While the officer in charge acknowledged the uniqueness of the case, he did not find it as humorous as I did.
[But] it is a serious issue due to one, the amount of alcohol he had on him at the time and two, in relation to those using these motorised devices that can cause serious injury to themselves or other people,” he said.
Hopefully the man receives his ice chest back once the prosecution is over. I’d hate to lose something that great. Best of luck to you, mate.
