Chatty Texas Uber Driver Starts Talking UT Football With Passenger, Says Mack Brown Was A Shit Coach, Turns Around To See Mack Brown Is His Passenger

Former national championship winning Texas head coach and current ESPN color commentator Mack Brown and his play-by-play partner Adam Amin are in San Antonio to broadcast the Valero Alamo Bowl this Thursday. Last night they popped into an Uber to hit the town when the apparent UT fan driving them decided to strike up a conversation about Longhorn football. Amin recapped the priceless exchange on Twitter.

Man, you’d think after three years of Charlie Strong making it to fewer bowl games than Wake Forest, and Texas sinking below even a non-Power 5 program in the state they own, that UT fans would look back fondly on Mack. Especially since, you know, he won a national fucking championship (and made it to a second, and was robbed of going to a third).

But nah, to Texas fans anything less than a Meyer/Saban program level of success means they might as well be Kansas (who Mack never lost to, by the way). That’s also a weird thing for the fanbase of a team that doesn’t have nearly as many championships as you’d think based on their expectations to believe. And the man who got them closest to that level of dominance? Mack Brown.

But yeah, totally, fuck Mack Brown. I don’t think Texas fans realize their current program trajectory is a lot more similar to Notre Dame than it is to Bama.

I feel bad for Brown, and not just because Texas fans are totally ungrateful. Talking to an Uber driver? Woof. No thanks.

I’d say roughly five out of every ten of Uber drivers I get like to strike up a conversation, and of those five maybe (maybe) one starts saying things that don’t make me want to tuck and roll out into the street with a total disregard for the speed we’re traveling at.

Uber Driver: Yeah it’s nice to make some extra money. I don’t got health insurance and these colostomy bags are expensive as hell.

Me: [dives out into traffic twelve miles away from intended destination]

Say what you want about cabs smelling like third world farts and consistently lying about their card readers not working, but those drivers are real pros on the “shutting the fuck up” front. They’re somehow even less interested in me than I am in them. I respect this.

[UPDATE]

Here’s Mack telling the story himself at the Alamo Bowl luncheon. Apparently the Uber driver was so shameless he asked for a selfie after the fact. FFS. That’s a low moment in one’s life.
