France Is Taking A Page Out Of America's Book, Now Loves Hamburgers

It turns out that American cuisine is catching on in the most delicious way possible. Burgers are slowly becoming a staple of French food, Uproxx reports.

Burger mania (in France) is unstoppable,” Bernard Boutboul, head of Gira Conseil, said. “If it goes on like this, then one can assume that within two years, sales of the jambon-beurre and burger will be neck and neck.”
Which is big news, considering that the jambon-beurre is one of France’s lunchtime staples. Last year, sales of the ham-and-butter baguette sandwich dropped to 1.23 billion, while sales of burgers rose 11% to 1.19 billion.
Surprisingly, the burger’s rise in popularity isn’t due to the Royale with cheese. In fact, only 1/3 of the hamburgers sold last year came from fast food restaurants like McDonald’s and Burger King. Which means that higher-end restaurants are getting in on the trend big time.

That’s right, we aren’t talking about depressing 3 AM McDoubles. We’re dealing with high end burgers here. The kind that are cooked medium rare, topped with all the fixins, and gorged on. It shocks me that it took the French this long to come around on “Burger mania.” There are few things better than throwing a couple handmade patties on the grill and listening to those bad boys hiss. Give those cheese-eaters access to Heinz 57 and let’s see them really go ballistic, especially if they throw one on fresh French bread because that stuff is delicious. The fact it’s overtaking the jambon-beurre, which is a buttered baguette and ham sandwich, is incredible seeing as those SOBs are seriously tasty. A ham sub just can’t compete with good ol’ American muscle though.

In these dark times, it’s good to see an American tradition get the respect it deserves. Of course, the new phenomenon in Bonjour Town isn’t to be eclipsed by the appetite for ground beef on the home front. The article goes on to explain that while the French are eating around 14 burgers a year, we weigh in at a solid 30 annually. Australia still has us beat with 38 which only enforces that Aussies are badasses and should be treated as such.

All this burger talk has me fiending. I’m going to go chop some mushrooms and crisp up some bacon. Heart disease is an issue for future Karl.
