Everything is bigger in Texas and the spring break beach parties are no exception. Thousands of spring breakers descend upon South Padre Island with one intention: rowdiness. Here’s your complete guide to making your stay count.
Located at the very bottom of Texas, South Padre Island is a choice destination for colleges across the Lone Star State, from the University of Texas, Texas Tech, and Texas A&M, to Texas State, Texas Christian University, and the University of Houston. South Padre is also where you’ll find spring breakers from the notoriously wild southeast, including any college in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.
Best Spots For Day Drinking
You’ll probably spend most of your day on the beach with a cooler full of Natty, but if you want to mix things up with a fresh margarita, then one of these spots is the play.
Wanna-Wanna Bar & Grill: They’ve got a giant saltwater pool and a cool palapa, which has made the scenic shoreside bar the backdrop for movies and magazines. But what they’re really known for is their margs.
Hammerhead Deck: Located in the Isla Grande resort, Hammerhead Deck is open to all during the daytime. It’s got great food, a gorgeous view of the beach, and live music.
Parrot Eyes: If you’re a fan of seafood with your drinks, then make moves to Parrot Eyes. It’s also got a ton of daytime activities, but more on that later.
Best Spots For Night Drinking
Louie’s Backyard: Louie’s is renowned as the premiere party spot for spring breakers. It’s 18 and up, too. They’ve got fireworks, mariachi bands, and TFM/TSM will hold an exclusive event there for two nights out of the week. They’ve even got bungee jumping.
The Quarterdeck Lounge: The Quarterdeck is the best place for live music on South Padre Island. The music starts at 9 p.m. and doesn’t stop until 2 a.m. Grab a cold drink by the poolside whiskey shack, and be sure to stop by on Wednesday for the “La Jaiba Downs” crab races at the Quarterdeck Lounge Raceway. Yes, crab races. I bet you’ve never lost your money that way before.
If you need a day of rest from drinking yourself into oblivion, here are some solid alternatives.
Jet Ski Tours: To quote the famous motivational speaker Daniel Tosh, “They say money can’t buy happiness… but it can buy a jet ski. Have you ever seen anyone sad on a jet ski?” Visit Parrot Eyes to tear up some surf.
Surfing Lessons: Do you want to — who am I kidding? You’re already way too uncoordinated for that shit and you’re gonna be way too drunk to learn such a technical new skill.
Banana Boats: Grab your boys and straddle a large banana while you get pulled through the water. Just like LeBron, Dwayne, and Chris!
Fishing: Here’s something more your speed. There are lots of fishing options in South Padre. Fish right on the island, the pier, or take a boat out for some deep sea fishing..
