I Basically Have To Visit Trinity College’s Zeta Psi, The Only Fraternity In Ireland

As soon as I finish writing this, I’m submitting a request to have roundtrip tickets from Austin to Dublin covered by Grandex so I, along with a couple others from the office, can get a firsthand experience of the fraternity culture in Ireland. At the moment, Irish fraternity culture can only be found at one college, in the sole fraternity on campus — the Theta Omicron chapter of Zeta Psi at Dublin’s Trinity College is the only fraternity in Ireland, and the young chapter recently initiated its 100th member.

With St. Patrick’s Day just a week out, what better time to cross the pond and immerse myself in Irish collegiate culture, and submerge myself in green Irish beer? But that’s one week out, and I have domestic affairs to tend to before I can take my talents international.

If I can’t piece this trip together by then, I’ll have to try and make it to Trinity College’s Trinity Ball on April 15, which, as I was told by a source from within the Zeta Psi chapter, is “Europe’s largest private party” that’s “famous all over the UK and Ireland.” Zeta Psi will be in attendance, so if they’re all about it, and the Irish fuck with it, I assume it’s a good venue to get blinding, Irish drunk — a bucket list item of mine.

With the help of Zeta Psi members and alumni from chapters abroad, Theta Omicron was founded in 2012. There are currently chapters in the U.S., Canada, England, and now in Ireland. Theta Omicron has 33 active members since their most recent initiation, bringing their all-time total to over 100. They’re sans chapter house currently, but are making strides to have a place to call home in the coming years.

They’re young and, in their country, unprecedented, but their brotherly bond, social calendar, philanthropic endeavors, shaky relations with their university and its independent students, and community involvement are that of longstanding American fraternities.

The event they’re most proud of, one they refer to as the “event of the year,” is called Lions Weekend. They team up the Zeta Psi chapter from Oxford and “hold ‘leadership training’ with Zeta Psi HQ.” In actuality, this is a weekend of “debauchery raised to an art form,” which, considering how Irish my very Irish source is, I imagine is pretty outrageous.

Below are pictures of current and former active members of the fraternity. Some were taken at the Oxford chapter and some during their tour of Zeta Psi houses here in the states.
