MTV rolled out the nominees for the 2016 Video Music Awards on Tuesday, but there was a major oversight in the “Best Hip Hop Video” category. Ya boy Lil Dicky got shafted.
The rapper took to Twitter to call out MTV for failing to nominate his video for “Save Dat Money”:
Let’s get something straight. MTV sucks. I don’t watch it (except for that one season of Buckwild — RIP Shain). The people reading this probably don’t watch it. But I’m still going to throw a bitch fit about this one because:
A) Lil Dicky would’ve done something fucking awesome onstage (either something hilarious or something super surprising/enlightening/down to earth) that I would have been able to enjoy on YouTube the following morning.
And B) The VMAs are the only outlet for music videos to get recognition for being dank. And the video for “Save Dat Money” was on another level. ICYMI:
The video is awesome because unlike the videos that did make the list, “Save Dat Money” shows humor and creativity and self-awareness. With Lil Dicky desperately asking rich people to let him shoot a video in their massive mansions until, finally, a sweet old lady accepts, it mocks the rap music video stereotype. And what did MTV do? Hand out nominations to videos that fit the stereotype to a T. Videos that are nothing more than jump-cuts of smoking weed and shaking asses.
I know this is a weird thing for me to get so passionate about, but I want to see Lil Dicky blow up as big as possible. He’s the only rapper to come out in the last five years who I can even tolerate listening to. Keep crushing it, LD. And MTV, get it the fuck together..
