Father’s Day is Sunday, so Foot Locker, in a savvy marketing ploy, rolled out an ad that shows a few of this year’s top NBA Draft prospects reflecting on all their dad has done for them. The star of the ad, which features De’Aaron Fox, Jayson Tatum, and Jonathan Isaac, is — of course — Lonzo Ball, who roasts his much-maligned father LaVar Ball for his endless spotlight-stealing behavior.
The ad is a hilarious and sage move by the Ball family to approach LaVar’s constant transgressions in a self-deprecating manner. While Fox, Tatum, and Isaac lovingly reflect on normal memories they have with their father, Lonzo mentions all the outlandish things LaVar has done in the past year to promote his son and the Ball brand. That includes saying Lonzo is better than reigning MVP Steph Curry and going on ESPN’s First Take and yelling back and forth with fellow blowhard Stephen A. Smith.
LaVar is an obnoxious attention whore who has overshadowed his son Lonzo who, by the way, happens to be a pretty incredible player and will likely be a top-three draft pick. Lonzo is seemingly the opposite of his dad — very quiet and soft-spoken. This Foot Locker ad is a pretty clever way for Lonzo to show some of his personality while also acknowledging that his dad, and all the media attention surrounding him, is absurd.
Good on ya, Lonzo. And way to capitalize, Foot Locker..
