This is, in my opinion, the first interesting development this ridiculous story has had yet.

A spokesperson for EA Sports has said that Madden ’17 will be updated with color commentary on Colin Kaepernick’s refusal to stand for the national anthem. Kaepernick, who refused to stand for the national anthem a week ago during a meaningless preseason game due to “the oppression of black people,” has riled up the entire nation for the better half of the last week. It has caused a significant uptick in preseason “takes” and will continue to dominate the sports world until the Patriots do something illegal again.

Below is the statement from EA Sports, via Game Spot:

Kaepernick’s decision will be briefly mentioned in-game, reflecting our commitment to authenticity in Madden NFL 17. Overall, our new commentary will mainly center around on-field performance, as well as major news like trades free agency signings and injuries.

Madden ’17’s announcing crew changed this year, as well. No longer do we get to enjoy the soundbites of Jim Nantz and Phil Sims criticizing our decision to run a fake field goal on third down from our own 18-yard line. This year, Brandon Gaudin and Charles Davis will be calling the shots. That means EA Sports is going to be dragging Gaudin and Davis into a studio every three weeks to record a quick take about some major NFL news story that has the media up in arms.

While I think that feature is pretty cool, I can see how it would irritate me pretty quickly. With stupid stories like this one, the last thing I want in my video game experience is my virtual announcers weighing in on a dumb controversy. They should be far more concerned with why I’ve decided to onside kick to start the second half even though I’m up by 42 points. That’s where Gaudin and Davis’ focus needs to be. Not Anthemghazi.

And with the number of stupid controversies increasing exponentially each year, Davis and Gaudin are going to need to schedule a standing appointment with EA Sports to keep up with all the nonsense. I’ll probably just have to mute the game when it’s all said and done.

Whatever. At least football is finally here.
