Nice Move

This weekend, for no apparent reason other than checking out one of the best historical rivalries in Big Ten college football, Ryan Lochte hung out at Penn State University.

Speaking from experience, any weekend that Ohio State comes to town to face off against the Nittany Lions, an already notable party scene ramps up even more, leading to utter pandemonium in the bars lining downtown State College’s two central streets, Beaver and College Avenues. The lines for entry literally stretch several blocks, and it’s nearly impossible to successfully bar hop unless you know bouncers, you have the mental fortitude to deal with hour-long lines, or, you know, you have 11 Olympic medals to your name, like Ryan Lochte does.

Reportedly, the Olympic swimmer wanted to check out Inferno, a brick oven pizza joint that also offers a decent lounge scene. As was the predictable case of an OSU weekend, the bar was at full capacity when Lochte and a few friends rolled through. But of course, he was seated promptly, because he’s won five gold medals for this blessed country.

After being seated, Lochte did exactly what I would have done if I was an 11-time Olympic medalist enjoying a Saturday afternoon, and ordered bottle service for his entire party. Not a bad move at all. His next gesture was an even nicer move.

From Fox 29 Philly:

Kristen Arcangelo, a first semester graduate student at Penn State and bar manager at Inferno, says Lochte came into the restaurant with ten friends, and a few girls who were following him around. Lochte and his party ordered bottle service. According to Arcangelo, the Olympic swimmer kept a low profile and was “very, very nice.” Lochte and his friends racked up a $425.40 bill. After they left, Arcangelo was pleasantly surprised when she saw that Lochte left a $400 tip.

Just giving a $400 tip to an unsuspecting, college-aged server. It’s a classy move, and I love it.

Apparently, servers at Inferno pool their tips together. While Arcangelo couldn’t keep the entire $400 herself, at least every server there now has a great job interview story about the time an Olympic legend dropped them an enormous tip.

In classic Lochte fashion, he signed off on his Penn State weekend with his trademarked, hashtagged “jeah.”

Well played, Ryan. Here’s to hoping you venture back to Happy Valley sometime soon.
