Friday night, the SMU Mustangs are hosting the TCU Horned Frogs in the Battle of the Iron Skillet. The football program is making this game more about first responders than themselves, though.

The athletic program will be honoring all Dallas area police officers, firefighters, and paramedics during the game. They are also honoring the police officers who put their life on the line to protect Dallas protestors during the horrific ambush on July 7th, when five officers were killed, as well as honoring a fallen SMU officer who was killed after being swept away during massive flooding in July.

All DFW first responders will receive four complimentary tickets to the game by presenting their badge or other official identification to the main ticket office. SMU will also hold a pre-game moment of silence for all of the fallen officers, and Dallas Police Chief David Brown will be taking care of the pre-game coin toss.

Head coach Chad Morris had this to say via SMU Athletics about the sign of appreciation:

“This will be a big game for us as we honor our local first-responders and pay tribute to them,” said Head Coach Chad Morris. “It’s an opportunity for us and our great city of Dallas to come together and lock arms and pay tribute to the lives that left us way too soon.”

SMU will also be sporting these decals on their helmets:

What a great gesture by SMU Football, especially with everything happening in our country regarding first responders. It’s nice to see them get the recognition they deserve for the outstanding work they do for the Dallas community.
