Clemson football may have gotten their teeth kicked in by Jameis Christ and the rest of the Seminoles on Saturday night, but Clemson won the pre-game, and probably the post-game, too.
One particular Clemson fan set the tone early and stole the hearts of America during the live broadcast of College Gameday by pulling off the greatest shirt-rip beverage-facial we’ve likely ever seen. Just look at him — ripping his shirt off hockey-style, taking his drink to the face like he was born to do it, and loving every second of it.
In my initial write-up, I mistakenly identified his drink as a beer, assumedly a darker craft-style beer. It was a Coke, though. Just Coke, as Davis Toney would explain to me via email. In fact, Toney was completely sober during his time in the spotlight…and atop his boy’s shoulders.
“Most of it went into my eyeballs, causing a horrific burning sensation only bearable by the beauty of national television fame. Believe it or not, I was completely sober.”
It would take a serious set of plums to pull off a stunt like this, even after taking back some liquid courage. But to sit on your boy’s shoulders and deliver a shirtless beverage money shot to yourself on national television…while sober? Kid’s got stones.
Was it premeditated?
“We just showed up to Gameday and noticed we were standing behind David Pollack’s head, so we figured he’d be on TV soon. I went up the first time and just swung my shirt around my head. When I came down my friends were saying the camera was still on him so we knew they were gonna go back to him at some point. That’s when I saw my friend holding a cup of coke and I told my friend to hoist me up so I could pour it on my face. The last thing I remember my friend saying was ‘You are only going to get 8 seconds of screen time, make it count.’
Little did we know it would be 50 seconds, and go viral.”
Nailed it. Lastly, I asked him if it has set in yet that he gave himself a facial on national television?
“As soon as I came down off his shoulders, I paused while my friends were laughing and had to ask myself if I just made a major bad life choice. Am I going to be unemployed for the rest of my life?
But after an hour or two I realized everyone found it funny so I figured I was in the clear.”
If you haven’t seen Davis’ appearance on College Gameday in its entirety yet, you simply have to. It’s amazing. Watch it here:
