In a move that will have fans of the Lobos cheering, the University of New Mexico has stated that beginning this fall, it will be offering beer and wine at all home football games.
Thanks in no small part to outcry from students and fans, UNM as followed a growing trend at schools around the country. Although the amount of alcohol fans can purchase, limited to four drinks, is relatively low compared to what’s going on in the tailgate lot, it’s definitely a step in the right direction.
On top of bringing in more revenue for the school’s athletics, this game changing decision will make watching Mountain West football far more enjoyable than anything else the school can do short of importing players from the SEC.
Now, I’m not really savvy on the dynamic of the rivalry between UNM and New Mexico State, but it’s worth nothing that NMSU has already been selling booze at its games. It seems to me that the most logical course of action is for both schools to begin one-upping each other. Think about it. NMSU sells alcohol at games, UNM follows. NMSU fires it up with dollar beer night, UNM comes back with hard liquor sales. Who knows? Maybe even New Mexico Tech will get in on the arms race.
