There are some recent developments in the story of Otto Frederick Warmbier, a brother of Theta Chi at the University of Virginia who was arrested in North Korea during a tour of the country.

According to an Irish dude who identified himself as Darragh (Darragh was a fellow member of Warmbier’s tour group, which was part of the China-based Young Pioneers tour company), Warmbier had been up all night with the rest of the tourists drinking vodka and having a good time. The following morning, he was dragged away by security guards at the Pyongyang airport and detained.

According to Kim Jong Un’s state-run KCNA news agency, Warmbier entered the country as a tourist “in order to destroy the country’s unity under the direction of the U.S. government.”

From Daily Mail:

It claimed Warmbier committed a ‘hostile’ act against the state and that he had links to Washington, but did not elaborate.

Damn. Every guy likes to think he’s done some pretty wild shit during his drunken college nights, but how many of us can say we got “become a public enemy of North Korea” drunk?

But in all seriousness, there is absolutely no way Warmbier should have been detained. This is North Korea trying desperately to grab some leverage over us in their laughable campaign to take over the world.

Even more disturbing, the tour guide called Warmbier after discovering he wasn’t on the plane, only for him to respond that he “didn’t want to leave” and wanted to go to the hospital for a headache.

He explained that Warmbier had been shouted at by armed guards at the terminal before he was dragged away from the terminal.

And after the panicked tour leader noticed Warmbier was missing on the plane, she eventually managed to reach him by phone.

According to Darragh, Warmbier told her ‘he didn’t want to leave’ and wanted to go to hospital because he had a headache.
‘He hung up the phone and that was the last they heard of him.’

The statement was clearly coerced out of Warmbier by the North Korean authorities.

Also, fuck the Daily Mail for taking the “look at the dumb drunk american acting stupid in a foreign country” angle.

This could have happened to anybody. Poor kid was in the wrong place at the wrong time. It says in the article that so much as “creasing a magazine with a photo of Kim Jong Un’s face” could have gotten them in trouble with the hypersensitive authorities. Warmbier probably had no idea he was doing something “wrong” in the first place. This is an attack against the American people and it should be treated as such.

I say we scramble the jets, do a friendly fly-by of Kim Jong’s dojo, and let them know who they’ll be fucking with if Warmbier isn’t returned stateside as soon as possible.
