Broadway Continues Its Assault On American Pop Culture With Rocky Musical

======= ======= ====== ====== ====== ===== ==== ====== ====== ===== ==== ======= ======= ====== ====== ====== ===== ==== ====== ====== ===== ====

Have you ever wondered what it would look like if Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed had dance fought instead of going toe-to-toe for 15 rounds for the World Heavyweight Championship belt? Well, wonder no more, as a musical rendition of Rocky is coming to Broadway. The show ran in Germany last fall and was “well received,” which is great, because the German people’s views on popular culture is so refined (see: Hasselhoff, David). As of now, no date for a stateside release has been announced.

Look, I get it. At its root, the original Rocky is a love story between a lovable, punchy club fighter and a shy, homely woman. Rocky is training for the fight of his life all while falling in love. It’s an enthralling tale of love, friendship, and triumph. Hell, it won Best Picture in 1976. However, the legacy of Rocky is one of toughness, beating the odds, sequels, 80s fashion, robot butlers, and destroying the Soviet Union while wearing awesome American flag trunks. To see the great history of Rocky Balboa tarnished by yet another unoriginal Broadway production makes my skin crawl.

To me, this is another case of creativity being stifled in the entertainment industry. Another remake, rehash, reboot casualty instead of an original idea like Avenue Q or Book of Mormon. Now we’re seeing an American icon in Rocky Balboa subjected to the humiliation of becoming watered down, pussified, and flat out destroyed by the bright lights of Broadway.

I thought ‘Rocky V’ was enough torture, but I guess I was wrong.
