As a kid that went to school on my parents’ dime for a practical degree like cinema studies at a top 10 program in the state of Florida with a sub 3 GPA to get into the in-demand, constantly growing field that is filmmaking, I find this new class at the University of California, Berkeley to be an insult to the academic community.
While I was busting my ass trying to stay awake and make it through another Terrance Malick movie so I could apply it to the REAL WORLD that one time a Thin Red Line question finally gets asked during trivia night, there are some jokers at Cal that are about to dig themselves further into debt or spend government grant money to learn a fictional language from a fantasy show with 15 episodes left.
Dothraki creator David J. Peterson will teach “The Linguistics of ‘Game of Thrones’ and the Art of Language Invention” four days per week in the May 22-June 30 session.
Dothraki has real grammatical rules, based partly on Spanish and Arabic, according to the university’s article.
You’re a complete loser if you take this class. I mean Dothraki is like maybe the fifth most useful made-up dialect in Game of Thrones. Enjoy all 7 minutes of screen time that low-class, trash language has left in the series. How about learning something more essential to the show like Valyrian or Skroth (team white walker), nerds? I don’t care if you talk like Khal Drogo, no freaky Comic-Con Khaleesi dressed minx is going to saddle up and ride you if you still look like Varys.
And 4 days a week? To learn some crazy Spanish, Arabic, horse hybrid speech? What are you thinking? Summer courses are all about minimum effort and a lax attendance policy so you can hit the pool or beach on a regular basis. The juice just doesn’t seem worth the squeeze in my humble and superiorly educated opinion. Enroll in something worthy of your time like cinematography where you’ll actually learn concepts that you’ll exercise in your every day life in the 180 degree rule or the theory of thirds. You’ll at least get some fire Instagrams..
