This weekend, Floyd “Money” Mayweather will step into the ring and fight Conor “Conor McGregor” McGregor (not sure if he has a nickname). But I’m not here to talk about that. I’m here to talk about what was going to be the fight of the year before the tough leprechaun and the illiterate wife beater took the spotlight.
Santos Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez Barragán versus Gennady Gennadyevich Golovkin, aka “GGG”, will finally face off on the 16th of September. The two best fighters in their division, with similarly hard-to-pronounce full names.
Canelo vs. GGG is the fight we should all be talking about.
Real boxing fans have been waiting years for this one. GGG was once compared to early Tyson, with quick-as-fuck knockouts and fights that last even shorter than Jason Biggs in bed (you’re welcome for that American Pie reference). He’s undefeated, with a perfect record of 37-0 on the line. The slightly more experienced Canelo isn’t undefeated but he’s a beast in his own right.
GGG is from Kazahkstan, so if he loses this one, not only will he lose his perfect record, but his country will go back to only being known for Borat. The stakes are high. This one is also arguably going to be harder to predict. They’re both arguably past their primes. And to the naked eye, they arguably have equal skill levels. Also, I’m saying “arguably” too much.
With Mayweather vs. McGregor, obviously it’s possible for McGregor to catch Floyd slipping. He could find his moment to land a vicious punch, knock him out and pull the biggest upset since that Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern movie. But realistically, Floyd probably has this W in the bag, even if he just has to box defensively for 12 rounds and win by decision to seal the deal.
But with GGG vs. Canelo, it’s more up in the air. This one is anyone’s game. This felt like a blockbuster event until it Mayweather vs. McGregor overshadowed it.
Let me put it to you like this. For a little bit, GGG vs Canelo was the HOTTEST girl in school. Everyone wanted to ask her to the homecoming dance. On top of that, she was smart, funny, and cool. But then Mayweather vs McGregor transferred to our school and she was an even HOTTER girl. Now, everyone wants to ask HER to the dance. But in reality, she’s actually pretty ditsy with no substance. Now everyone wants to bone MayMac, and poor Canelo vs. GGG keeps looking in the mirror wondering why she got so fat and ugly all of a sudden. Sad!
Watch Mayweather vs. McGregor, by all means. But don’t let it overshadow what’s bound to be an infinitely more entertaining fight. Terrible metaphors aside, boxing might be dying, so don’t step on it’s throat, yo..
