Jordan Spieth Selects “Traditional Texas Barbecue” As Masters Dinner

2015 Masters champion and potential greatest-golfer-of-all-time Jordan Spieth selected the menu for the traditional Masters winners dinner, and the native Texan went with exactly what you would expect: Texas barbecue.

Spieth, a Dallas native, will fill his fellow golfers up with traditional Texas brisket and sausage at the dinner — held every year on the eve of the tournament. Winners from the previous year are in charge of making the menu selections, and Spieth is clearly doing everyone a favor by choosing the best damn food on the planet.


“I’ve still got a bit of time before I have to advise the officials at Augusta National but I am leaning towards a Texas-like barbecue,” Spieth said in the report. “So it will be a choice of Texan meats as my main meal choice.”

According to tradition, each year before the annual tournament in Augusta, Ga., the previous year’s winner chooses a meal for the rest of the golfers competing in the tournament. Previous champs have selected dinner offerings from their environs. Former champion Sandy Lyle infamously offered up haggis (a Scottish dish made with either sheep heart, liver or lungs) as his meal of choice in 1989. Georgia native Bubba Watson went traditional southern with grilled chicken, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, corn and cornbread.

In his first dinner as winner of the tournament, Tiger Woods fed golfers clubhouse casual with his cheeseburgers and french fries offering in 1998.

As someone who has lived in the Carolinas and Texas, I can confidently say that it doesn’t get better than Texas BBQ. Moist brisket with some sausage, cream corn, slaw and mac and cheese topped off with a Dr. Pepper is probably the best meal humans ever created. I’m sure you Kansas City folks have a great time with your ribs, but come on, this is Texas. If Texas does one thing right, it’s barbecue.

Maybe Spieth is just trying to fatten up all the other golfers so they get tired and groggy and perform like shit in the first round. Let’s be honest, there is no portion control when it comes to Texas BBQ. You eat until you fall asleep or have a heart attack.

I wonder what BBQ joint Spieth is going to have cater the meats, if that is even an option. I believe Austin-native and two-time Masters winner Ben Crenshaw flew in Salt Lick BBQ after his last victory. That’s probably the right move here, too.
