Spurs star forward Kawhi Leonard isn’t a flashy guy. He doesn’t talk trash on the court, he won’t show you up, and he barely speaks his mind when it comes to interviews. He’s as businesslike as it gets when it comes to professional athletes. He’s also pretty damn good at basketball, which earned him a nice little five-year, $94M contract with the San Antonio Spurs.

If you were a 24-year-old kid who just scored a contract that pays you $16.4M for the next year, you’d probably buy a lot of nice cars, maybe a quaint $1,000,000+ house, and a lot of the greatest quality steaks America has to offer. Kawhi? No, he still lives the life of a broke college kid.

From Sports Illustrated:

Leonard spends his summers in a two-bedroom apartment in San Diego, where he hangs a mini hoop over one door so he can play 21 against [friend and roommate Jeremy] Castleberry. He carries a basketball in his backpack even when he isn’t going to the gym. He often drives a rehabbed ’97 Chevy Tahoe, nicknamed Gas Guzzler, which he drove across Southern California’s Inland Empire as a teenager. “It runs,” Leonard explains, “and it’s paid off.”

He is happy to sponsor Wingstop, which sends him coupons for free wings, so he can feed his Mango Habanero addiction. This winter, after his $94 million contract kicked in, he panicked when he lost his coupons. Wingstop generously replenished his supply.

The guy can buy almost whatever he wants and he’s rolling around in a ’97 Chevy Tahoe probably worth around $1,100, eating free wings from fucking Wingstop, and living in a two-bedroom apartment with his childhood best friend. Not only that, but when his damn free wing coupons got lost, he panicked. Panicked! He’s an addict!

To be honest, though, I kinda respect his lifestyle. Far too often in professional sports you see athletes go broke just years after they retire because they’ve spent their career raining tens of thousands of dollars at the club just to impress some skanks that’ll be gone tomorrow. Plus, Kawhi gets free Wingstop. Can’t hate on that.
