A year ago, when watching democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders in a debate, I had an odd thought. And as it turns out, apparently many, many Americans had the same exact thought. I just couldn’t stop thinking “Why the hell does this dude sound just like Larry David?”
Well, pop culture caught up quick, and the Curb Your Enthusiasm star/ Seinfeld co-creator got the memo. He damn near immediately started appearing in Saturday Night Live skits playing the Vermont senator. But once The Berning Man dropped out of the presidential race, obviously our favorite king of neurosis dropped out of SNL. The dude spends years away from the spotlight at a time. Luckily, his TV show is returning this year and it’s about damn time.
But, as fate would have it, the saga doesn’t end there. Because Bernie and Larry just found out they’re apparently related. Yeah, seriously.
In an upcoming episode of a PBS show called Finding Your Roots, a program where celebrities find about their DNA and ancestry, Larry finds out that him and Bernie are distant relatives. It was supposed to be kept under tight wraps, but it slipped out during an interview that he discovered Sanders was “like a third cousin or something.” The Emmy-nominated comedian says he was pretty pleased when he found out. Saying he was “very happy” and “I love Bernie.”
This part is like the movie-like “eureka” moment that a frustrated detective would have. It all replays in our heads. And dammit, now it all makes sense. They look similar, and they got the same exact voice. Granted, pretty much all old, angry, bald white guys look and sound exactly the same, but still.
All of this can only mean one thing.
In 2020, Larry David needs to run for president..
