LSU DKE Takes ‘Who Do You Know Here?’ A Bit Too Far, Gets Charged With Battery

Formal rush can be a stressful time for both active and prospective fraternity members. This is the future for the both of you, and both sides are on edge in an attempt to get things right. That’s why seemingly non-confrontational situations — like having a non-member check to make sure no rushees got loose from the tour group — can turn into an LSU DKE member getting charged with battery for throwing a guy down two flights of stairs. Just trying to make a good first impression.

Police say a volunteer of Rho Alpha — similar to the fraternity version of a Pi Chi — went to check the other floors of the DKE house to make sure none of the potential rushees had left the tour group and gone to other floors: a rush rule violation. It seemed like a simple task, but…

From The Advocate:

When the volunteer reached the third floor, a man confronted him about what he was doing upstairs, according to a police report. After explaining, the volunteer turned to leave, but was confronted by a second man, later identified as Nicholas Daniel Lorusso II, who pushed him down the stairs, the report says.

As the volunteer got up, Lorusso again pushed him down the next set of stairs, cutting and fracturing the victim’s hand, the report says. The volunteer needed 13 stitches in his hand and will need surgery to repair the fracture.

This is a prime example of why asking questions first and shooting later doesn’t work. If this was just a drive-by shoving, Lorusso wouldn’t be in this situation.

In all seriousness, this reaction was a tad aggressive. I’ve enjoyed dropping the “who do you know here?” line as much as the next guy, but that’s usually when randos are at the front door. I’m guessing this rush event was taking place either in the morning or early afternoon? You’ve got to be better than that. Unless the guy was talking shit; I have a strict talk shit, get hit rule.

If only there was a way to explain this guy’s behavior…

Lorusso, 20, of 1133 Robert E. Lee, New Orleans, was booked Wednesday into Parish Prison on second-degree battery.

Shiiiiiiiiiiiit. Unfortunate week for this man. Jail today, street sign toppled tomorrow.
