Notre Dame Joins ACC In All Non-Football Sports

The courting of Notre Dame reached its conclusion, and the Atlantic Coast Conference landed the big prize. With the impending super conference musical chairs, programs in lesser leagues will be vying for spots. With their vast national appeal, storied tradition, financial pull and deep pockets, Notre Dame was the big fish in the pond, and they got the pick of the litter. They leave behind the Big East, who isn’t finished being ravished and plundered by a long shot. Nature versus nurture, Lodge.

And now, Notre Dame brings the league’s team total to 15.

Notre Dame will play five football games each season vs. ACC opponents according to the ESPN report. The Irish already have four future ACC opponents — Boston College, Miami, Pittsburgh and Wake Forest — on their schedule this fall.

Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said the institution, as was long rumored, had monitored the landscape of conference expansion for a long time. He said the Atlantic Coast Conference was the best fit.

“We are able to maintain our historic independence in football, join in the ACC’s non-BCS bowl package, and provide a new and extremely competitive home for our other sports.”

They join the ACC for every sport outside football, where they will remain independent. They will, however, schedule five football games against ACC opponents each year until the playoff format begins in 2014, at least that’s the most sensible theory.
