According to Google Maps, Natchitoches, La., is about three hours northwest of Baton Rouge. It is home to Northwestern State University, along with the men of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Northwestern State is set to battle its in-state rival, Louisiana Tech, on Saturday. To raise awareness and funds for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital–and to drum up a bit of excitement for the game–NSU’s Pike chapter is holding its first ever Game Ball Run.
The brothers will take turns running the game ball from NSU’s campus to Louisiana Tech’s campus, and they will complete the 80-mile journey in about 24 hours.
From Beauregard Daily News:
The brothers of PIKE will physically run the game ball the 80 miles from NSU’s Natchitoches campus to Louisiana Tech in Ruston to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
“PIKE sees this as a great way to raise money for our philanthropy while reigniting the historic rivalry between the Demons and the Bulldogs,” said fraternity spokesman Zachary Ebarb in the release.
The fraternity will hold a send-off on Friday, Sept. 19 for the runners, who will run in four-mile shifts and will be escorted by deputies from the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office, the release states.
The fraternity will raise money through sponsors, who have the option of sponsoring an individual runner or making a flat donation to the overall run.
Good on you, boys. Keep your philanthropy commitment strong.
