Summer jobs for college kids are usually just a fun way to make beer money for the upcoming semester. If you haven’t found a summer job just yet, here are a few things you should know.
These are part time positions us 20 something year olds take on for three to four months…until it’s time to dip out and head back to school. Summer jobs are what you make them. They can either be a blast or a bust, it’s up to you.
When looking for a summer job you want to make sure that the vibes check out. When you go to apply, observe the people who are already working there and see what their overall mood is like. You want to make sure the majority of your co-workers are also just there for the summer. That way, not only do you have a job with people you can relate to but you might even make a few new friends.
Many summer jobs are an inside / outside kind of deal, so make sure you’re willing to work on some blazing hot sunny days. For example: It’s all fun and games when you get paid to valet Teslas at your local high end restaurant…but it might not be as fun when you’re standing outside in 98 degree weather with uniform khakis on everyday. So just keep that in the back of your mind.
You should give a shit about your summer job, but not too much. You have to remember that you are someone’s employee and they pay you to do a job, but at the same time you’re only young once. So if you get free tickets to a Miley Cyrus concert, get your shift covered or fake food poisoning and go. Life’s too short.
With that being said, you should try not to leave your summer job on bad terms. Over and over again you hear your professors talk about networking in a professional setting, but what they don’t tell you is that some of these summer jobs can lead to a career. I’m not saying if you’re a lifeguard at a country club you’ll eventually own it. What I AM saying is…maybe you’re a lifeguard at a country club and you save Mark Cuban’s kid from drowning and he is so grateful for you and you both get to talking and he asks if you’re in school and you say “yes for business” and he says he’s a businessman himself and offers you a job on the spot. BOOM. Summer job turned career. (Okay, I get that that is oddly specific, BUT YOU GET THE IDEA.)
Getting a summer job is the first step to becoming an adult, whether you like it or not. You take on adult traits such as: responsibility, accountability and more importantly STRESS.
Adults will try to tell you that you have it easy and that you should not be stressed out when it comes to a temporary position. But I’m here to tell you it’s okay to be stressed out. From finding coverage to admitting you made a mistake to your boss, there is a whole list of things that can become stressful. Which is why I always have a Sunday Scaries after any shift to calm me down. Since I’ve started taking Sunday Scaries I’ve traded in my post shift brewski for their calm tasty treat. Toss one or two of these bad boys in and you forget that old lady called you a “young and stupid moron” because you forgot her side of mayonnaise.
