We are heading into October, and the Kansas Jayhawks are yet to lose a football game. Let me repeat that, a FOOTBALL game. En route to demolishing Duke, Daniels finished nineteen of twenty-three passing with four touchdown passes and eighty-nine yards on the ground. The guy looks like the offspring between Mike Vick and Serena Williams. If Roger Goodell saw a video of how he’s been beating defenses mercilessly (specifically in an elevator), he would be suspended from the NFL for an entire year. The Jayhawks’ defense? Not great. They are giving up twenty-seven points a game. But when your team is averaging 6.6 yards per rush, and you have the best quarterback in the nation, all your team really needs is a few big stops a game.
Iowa State is coming off a close loss to Baylor, but they’ve looked pretty good this year. The Cyclones are led by their elite defense, which is better than Pepto Bismol at stopping the runs. Opposing teams are running for an average of 2.7 yards per run and 75.8 yards on the ground per contest on the season. In total, they have conceded 303 rushing yards through four outings. While their pass defense is good-to-average, they still only allow 266 yards per game, good for fourteenth in the entire division one. On offense, Iowa State is about as average as a guy named Ned who works in accounting. Hunter Dekkers is a competent quarterback prone to mistakes, and Jirehl Brock is a talented running back behind a good offensive line, but he’s no Breece Hall. Vegas likes Iowa State -3, but Kansas loves beating spreads almost as much as Andy Reid likes putting barbecue sauce on a dead pig. The Jayhawks are 4-1 ATS in their last five home games and 7-0 ATS in their last seven games overall. Jalon Daniels is the best quarterback in college football, and if he wants his Heisman hopes to come to fruition, he will find a way around the Cyclone defense.
