The TarHeels Are The Sleeping Giants Of March Madness

It’s March, and for the first time in my life, I will actually get to watch every single college basketball game. Most of the time I’m working, and I miss the first couple of days which are the best in my opinion. You wake up, get the beers next to the couch, turn on the tv, and you don’t move for the rest of the day. There is no such thing as too many screens. You have one game on TV, a game on your laptop, a game on your phone, and then a game on a tablet. Most fans are like me and only care about college basketball when it’s March. In watching all day the last week, I have come to one conclusion the TarHeels are the sleeping giant and a team to be reckoned with.

Is rooting for a blue blood kind of like rooting for the Warriors or the Lakers? You have no idea who’s really on the team, but you know the team is always good, so you automatically pick them. For most years, the answer is yes, but nothing is normal in the college basketball world this year. Duke sucks and isn’t going to make the tournament. Coach K will somehow spin this that he doesn’t even want to be in the tournament because it’s not safe with Covid. Kentucky finished the season going 9-16 and will miss the tournament. They had to win the SEC tournament for a chance, and Mississipi State eliminated them. I know nothing about the bulldogs for basketball, but I know they aren’t a powerhouse.

North Carolina eliminated Virginia Tech from the ACC Tournament in tremendous fashion today. The TarHeels were the 6th seed going into the ACC Tournament, finishing the regular season going 18-9. They won tonight 81-73 and will face Florida State tomorrow in the semi-finals. In the last 2 days, North Carolina’s freshman have balled out. Last night the freshman scored 70 points in the blowout win against Notre Dame, and then tonight, R.J. Davis scored 19 points, 14 in the 2nd half, and Day’Ron Sharpe scored 10 points.

The TarHeels not only can generate scoring, but they led the league in offensive rebounding percentage with 41.4%. The addition of Garrison Brooks brings the defense back. The TarHeels don’t have a great defense as they are in the latter half of the league in most stats.

Why am I so high on North Carolina? They have the star potential with R.J.Davis. They can clean up the boards and are well-coached. After tonight’s victory, Roy Williams now ranks 3rd in all-time wins passing Bobby Knight. A star can take over March Madness as Kemba Walker did in 2011 with the UCONN Huskies. Can R.J. do the same for North Carolina? Also, the odds for the TarHeels will be great as they will probably end up the 5th seed in the tournament. You get shit odds for the #1 seeds, so I’ll take a blue blood getting amazing odds.
