Pixar and Disney will be releasing a prequel to the 2001 hit film Monsters, Inc., called Monsters University, in 2013. This time around we follow John Goodman’s psychedelic demon bear and Billy Crystal’s one eyed retarded horned frog as they live the college life at Monsters University, an institution of higher learning that specializes in the instruction of terrifying children, so it’s not unlike clown college, really. Note that no one at this university is working to find a more consistent energy source than the screams of children. Monster University is better known for its nightmareology program than for its engineering department, apparently.
But Mike and Sulley (the retarded frog and demon bear, respectively) aren’t just going to college, they’re rushing a monster fraternity. TFM (Total Frat Monster).
Billy Crystal elaborates on the plot to Entertainment Weekly:
“[Mike and Sully] end up in the same fraternity where they have this scare competition — like Greek Games in college,” says Crystal. “They have to mobilize a group, sort of like Revenge of the Nerds-monsters, and get them ready to be scary.”
So it’s the classic story of a rag tag bottom tier house earning the respect of their Greek peers all the while maybe learning a little bit about themselves, too. But I wonder, what does being involved in Greek Life at Monster University entail? What sort of crazy monster frat hijinks will we see? Will monsters literally scare the panties off sorority girls in a panty raid? Will a lovable yet pervy monster watch from a window as coeds have a playfully sexual pillow fight with their thoraxes (or whatever monsters find sexy) exposed? Will a monster hold up a child, stab her in the abdomen, and then crack her neck and shotgun her blood? Holy fuck, that got really dark all of the sudden. Sorry guys.
Obviously the movie will be pretty tame, but I’m still excited. I’m all for a Pixar film helping to indoctrinate children into going Greek. This might be the only time I ever say this, but well done Billy Crystal, well done.
