Try Not To Cry Reading About Hundreds Of Strangers Taking This Dog On His Final Walk

======= ======= ====== ====== ====== ===== ==== ====== ====== ===== ==== ======= ======= ====== ====== ====== ===== ==== ====== ====== ===== ====

This story is a litmus test for whether you are a good and decent person, or a soulless monster who deserves nothing good in life. If you are not moved to at least a lump in your throat while reading about Walnut, the 18-year-old whippet, going on his final walk on the beach, you are a bad person. Also fuck you.

Walnut is old (I mean, shit, 18 is almost unheard of – little guy lived a long time), and his owner wanted to send him to doggie heaven doing what he loved. Walnut’s owner posted about his final walk on social media and encouraged people to join him. The post was shared several hundred times and many people showed up, including strangers, with their dogs to #WalkWithWalnut one final time. Poor Walnut was so depleted and sick and old that he had to be carried.

A little publication called TIME that I wrote for once brings us the story of Walnut’s final walk, the day before he was euthanized.

On Nov. 8, Mark Woods encouraged others on Facebook to join him on Walnut’s last outing on a beach in Cornwall, in southwestern U.K., after learning that the 18-year-whippet had to be put down due to ill-health.

“Sadly I am having to have Walnut euthanised on Saturday 12th November and so we will be having a last walk together on his beloved Porth Beach at 9.30am” he wrote on Facebook. “I would love it if dog lovers/owners and friends would join us for a celebration of Walnut…He has had an incredible life and having reached the grand age of 18 is ready for his final sleep. Hope to see you on Saturday.”

To Woods’ surprise, the post was shared thousands of times and, come Nov. 12, hundreds had gathered to join him for the heartbreaking occasion. Walnut ended up being carried on the day as he was too weak to walk along the beach.

Why can’t dogs just live forever, man? I hate this shit.
