An incident that took place at a Georgia college this past week shows just how astronomical the stigma surrounding legal open carry is in the world we live in today. According to Fox News, a Georgia police officer, in uniform, was asked to leave a classroom due to the fact that he had his service weapon on him during the class. The source states that he was asked to leave after the professor became uncomfortable with the gun in the classroom.

Frankly, in light of all of the public shootings that have occurred in recent memory, an armed police presence, even if they are just taking a class, should make people feel more secure, not paranoid due to the fact that they have a gun on them. As Tim Reichert, who is a spokesman for the Southern States Police Benevolent Association, said, “I find it a bit disturbing that someone would object to having an armed law enforcement in the classroom, much less, the very professor teaching the class.”

The school has since issued an apology.

From FOX News:

Darton State College is appreciative for the service of our law enforcement, and welcome them as students on our campus,” Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs Thomas Ormand said in a statement. “We have apologized to the officer for our misunderstanding when he attended class on our campus, and we regret this happened. We have met with the faculty and staff involved to reiterate the Georgia Law and Darton Policy.

Even with the apology, this incident shows just how closed-minded we have become as a society when it comes to controversial issues. We have reached a point where people view guns as being a threat regardless of who is holding them, and quite honestly, that is just sad.
