Avril Lavigne (Still) Has Big Plans For ‘Sk8er Boi’

What does this have to do with Total Frat anything? Nothing… other than Avril Lavigne was one of my first crushes, so shut up and keep reading. It is also a Monday morning, so what else do you have going on?

Now that that is out of the way, the now-37 but still pretty hot, pop punktress went on She Is The Voice podcast the other day and talked about “Sk8er Boi” … one of her favorite songs… and the plan she has for it now that it is set to turn 20.

“Recently with it being almost the 20th anniversary, a lot of people have been asking me to play this song on TV shows, so it keeps getting brought back up and people will always reference it to me,” she said.

“And so, I’m actually going to turn this song into a film and take it to the next level.”

A film? About Sk8er Boi?

I mean, okay?

The song was originally released when she was just 16 and it was full of all of the typical cliches, “You know what it was like in high school, you have all the different groups and cliques, and there’s like skaters, preps and jocks,” she said.

This is not the first time there has been discussion about turning the lovable Sk8er Boi into a movie. The last time it was rumored was back on 2003 but it never got off the ground.

With nostalgia being the only thing left in Hollywood, why not give it another go?

Lavigne said that it actually makes for an interesting, if not overdone, storyline.

“It’s kind of like a missed opportunity at love,” she said.

“And it’s like the skater boy is in love with the preppy girl and she’s like too cool for him, but then five years from now she’s feeding the baby and she’s all alone and she wishes she would have followed her heart and not tried to live up to society’s expectations.”

A modern day Romeo & Juliet it is not… but who cares.

  1. I mean, it’s about as well-thought-out and believable of a premise for a movie as half of what’s being released these days, so why not, I guess? Even if it doesn’t go forward theatrically, this feels like just the kind of thing that Hallmark would go for.
