This is an appreciation post to Miley Cyrus. So, if you don’t like her then you might as well dip out.
1) Miley is a piece. If you disagree with that, get your eyes checked.
2) Miley makes some good tunes. They may not be for everyone, but bet your ass that between originals or covers there is enough out there that for you to enjoy.
3) It was 11 years ago today that she broke out of the Disney model and into the second version of Miley with a bong rip.
To the tape:
“I’m not perfect,” Cyrus told Marie Claire after the video first surfaced. “I made a mistake… I’m disappointed in myself for disappointing my fans.”
She also pushed the right buttons for me when she defended herself by saying, “college kids your age all over America are smoking bongs with a lot more than salvia in them. But they’re not Miley Cyrus. They’re not role models. So for me, it was a bad decision, because of my fans and because of what I stand for.”
Cyrus has continued to distance herself from that Hannah Montana bullshit, and even has gone on to become an advocate for the use of cannabis. She punctuated her movement when she smoked a joint on stage at the 2013 MTV Europe Music Awards (though it got cut from the delayed broadcast).
Miley said on The Big Ticket podcast in June 2020 that she was six months sober… “It’s really hard because especially being young, there’s that stigma of ‘you’re no fun. It’s like, ‘Honey, you can call me a lot of things, but I know that I’m fun.’ The thing that I love about it is waking up 100%, 100% of the time. I don’t want to wake up feeling groggy. I want to wake up feeling ready.”
… and then revealed that the pandemic had pushed her back off the wagon…
She discussed her going back to consumption on the Zane Lowe on Apple Music podcast, saying, “It’s never easy, but it’s pretty easy for me to be sober or in and out of sobriety because it’s like the day I don’t want to f—ing do it anymore, I don’t. The day that I do, I do.”
