There’s something about a Philadelphia sports team that makes them want to perform better when everyone has counted them out. The Phillies are coming off of a game where they eviscerated the Braves so badly that if I was Brian Snitker, I would have rage quit in the fourth inning. There’s a lot of pop in Kyle Schwarber’s bat right now, and after a mostly abysmal June, Nick Castellanos finally appears to be seeing the ball again. The team that everyone wrote off after a slew of embarrassing blown saves in April and May just finished June with a record of 19-8.
With Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler both pitching exceptionally, Schwarber, Castellanos, and Rhys Hoskins will be burdened carrying this team to Wild Card contention. The Cardinals come into this series 5-5 in their last ten games with some ugly losses to teams with less talent than them. Neither team will be throwing out their best pitchers until the final game of the series, in which we get the pleasure of watching Wheeler battle against Benjamin-Button’s-disease-riddled Adam Wainwright. I think Philadelphia takes two out of three. Bet on the Phillies.
