Virginia Tech and Duke. If this was any year but this one, I would put all the chips on Duke. But it’s 2023, and Virginia Tech has already won the matchup this season, so anything is possible. And if I can let you guys in on a little secret, I’ll say that I’m pretty confident that Virginia Tech will win it again.
Now Kentucky is a solid team, you won’t find me lying there. They are twenty and eight, although they remain nationally unranked. I really like their starting center Kyle Filipowski; he’s been averaging 15.0 points per game and 9.1 rebounds per game. The man can’t hit the broad side of a barn from three, but if you get him in the paint, good luck stopping him. Something to note with Kyle as well is that while he does lead the team in points it’s the team’s other center, Dereck Lively II who leads the team in blocks. So while offensively, he may be putting in the work, it’s not the best of looks when your backup has more than double the blocks per game you have. And this Duke team has a habit of losing to Virginia teams. They’ve already lost to Virginia Tech earlier this season, as well as UVA.
Virginia Tech is a very solid gritty team. They’ve already beaten Duke once this season, and I love their chances of doing so again. In terms of star power, I really enjoy their forward Justyn Mutts’ game. He’s been averaging 7.3 rebounds per game, 4.9 assists per game, and 1.6 steals per game. He gets it done at every phase of the game and is, in many ways, the energy of the team. I also would like to take the time to highlight Grant Basile, the Hokies’ top scorer, who has been getting 16.6 points per game on 51.9% shooting. I would say it never hurts to be scoring more than half the times you attempt to, especially when you’re a team’s top-scoring option.
This will be a great game to watch, but this matchup has already happened, and we’ve seen the outcome. Bet on Virginia Tech’s moneyline and get your extra $200 if the Hokies win.
