The selection committee felt that Notre Dame was only worthy of a fifth-place ranking. However, the Fighting Irish were quickly able to show that they belonged with the top teams in College Football. They had a convincing win in the first round of the College Football Playoff, defeating the Indiana Hoosiers by a score of 17-27, and shocked the world by knocking off the second-seeded Georgia Bulldogs in the second round.
The oddsmakers believe the matchup between Penn State and Notre Dame will be a close one. The Fighting Irish come in as the slight favorites in this matchup by just a 1.5-point margin over the Nittany Lions. Oddsmakers also believe that this matchup will be a low-scoring affair with the over/under marked at 46.5 points.
