Nothing says college like a movie night with friends (let’s be honest if you’re reading my blogs you’re not having the other kind of movie night) so I’m here to give you my top ten list of college-themed movies.
This will of course be in two parts because I know how bad your attention spans are. Also yes I do have a Letterboxd with over 500 movies rated so I can say I know my stuff and I have too much free time. Also, I will not be including college sports movies, that will be a different blog so I can keep up my quota.
10. Legally Blonde
Now I know I said above you guys probably are not going to be spending much time with women, on the off chance one or two of you do convince a girl to watch a movie with you, you might need some recs. Legally Blonde is a classic about a girl who tries to get into Harvard Law and prove everyone wrong. I’m not a huge musical guy, but this movie is lighthearted, has some funny moments, and can be enjoyed by both genders.
9. Pitch Perfect
Well if the girl you watched Legally Blonde with was impressed enough by your (my) movie taste enough to give you a second shot, throw on Pitch Perfect. Another musical movie, Pitch Perfect follows college students as they compete in group singing contests. Pitch Perfect is pretty funny and captures the college campus experience in a way that most of us wouldn’t get to see otherwise.
8. Neighbors
Neighbors is a film about a young couple with a newborn baby who gets the surprise of a fraternity house moving into the building next door after they burnt down their old one. Seth Rogan and Rose Byrne proceed to wage war on the frat, hoping to get them kicked out so they can get back to their quiet boring routines. A great movie to throw on late night after the bars while you debrief the night with the boys before inevitably falling asleep on the couch with your forgotten doordashed Taco Bell getting rained on outside.
7. Monsters University
Now I might get some flak for this one, but Monsters University took a classic movie we grew up on, and made it relatable once again as we went off to college. An origin story of the friendship between Sully and Mike, this movie follows the pair as they attend MU and rush Oozma Kappa. Sure it’s an animated movie for children, but it’s honestly a great time and does a good job exploring the dynamics between friendships going through college. Throw this one on when your little brother comes up to see what college life is all about.
6. 22 Jump Street
22 Jump Street is a sequel movie about a duo of undercover cops who pretend to be college students in order to bust a drug ring. While not as good as the original, 22 Jump Street is still hilarious and a great watch. Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Ice Cube, and Jimmy Tatro?? Sign me up. They rush a frat, they play football, a most importantly, they do slam poetry. This movie is a great time and while it gets a little unrealistic does a good job showing some of the crazy stuff that can go down in college.
