Alright folks, here is where it gets good. The top five college movies according to me, and I know my stuff.
5. Van Wilder
Inspired by the legendary college career of comedian Bert Kreischer, The Machine, Van Wilder is the crasiest movie on the list. Starring Ryan Reynolds racing to complete his education before his dad cuts him off, this movie is hilarious and shows how crazy college can get with maybe a little exaggeration.
4. The Social Network
Taking a more serious tone, The Social Network is a biopic about Mark Zuckerberg and the invention of Facebook. While only a little of it takes place while he is at Harvard, I’m counting it as a college movie because it is so so good. While probably not very relatable to the people reading my blogs, it’s a great story and a fantastic movie to turn on when you want something with a little more substance than Family Guy.
3. Old School
A movie that is probably a representation of what a lot of post-grads wish they could do, Old School is about a group of older guys who want to relive their glory days and end up creating their own fraternity when one of them moves back close to campus. Will Ferrell, Luke Wilson, and Vince Vaughn are so funny and this movie hits whether you’re still living in the good times or just want a way to relive them. You’re my boy, Blue!!
2. Good Will Hunting
Another more serious film, Good Will Hunting is about a genius janitor at MIT who is given a chance by one of the professors. Sure it has laugh out loud moments, but this is a more serious movie while still taking place in and around a college. That being said, those colleges are MIT and Harvard which I’m sure are very different experiences than the public institution I attended. I’m also a Masshole so this movie has a special place in my heart.
1. Animal House
Sure this one might be old, but it is the quintessential college fraternity movie. From rushing to fighting to keep their fraternity on campus, Belushi stars in this masterclass every boy should watch before heading off to college for the first time. If you’ve every wondered where toga parties or sweaters that just said “college” on them came from, watch this movie.
