The puck is set to drop on the NHL season and the Colorado Avalanche are set to defend their Stanley Cup title. The team will be opening its defense with a contest against Chicago. The Blackhawks… well, they are a far cry from when they were winning — or at least competing — for titles.
Colorado is the obvious favorite here. It is where we are going to place our money plenty of times this season. The Avs were able to hold onto most all of its best players this offseason. Its front office was able to get deals done with Valeri Nichushkin and Artturi Lehknonen. Perhaps more importantly it also locked up Nathan MacKinnon to an insane extension. Oh, it also has Cale Makar coming back, too. Suffice it to say the Avs may be setting up a dynasty run here.
The lone question is if the combo of Pavel Francouz and Alexander Georgiev can fill the pipes as well as Darcy Kuemper did. With what is in front of them, it may not matter greatly.
Chicago, for its part, is setting up for a rebuilding year.
The Blackhawks already moved on from star winger Alex DeBrincat. In most circles it is believed that both Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane will soon be dealt, too. There is not a rush to get either out of town; there should still be a solid return waiting for both. Kane could draw more interest with one year left on his deal and coming off of a 92-point season.
Suffice it to say, these are two franchises with very different immediate goals. While talent is stacked high on both rosters, the Avs are a much better team and it is time to ride that to the window.
