As two seemingly even squads enter the 2022-23 season it would be easy to call this a toss up game. It is not. It is a money maker.

After being a perennial power for quite some time, New Jersey is setting up for this year to be a return to competitiveness. It would not shock to see both potential superstar Nico Hischier and impact defender Dougie Hamilton take another step forward. Free agents like Ondrej Palat and Erik Haula will add goals, and leadership, too. The question will be if Vitek Vanecek and Mackenzie Blackwood can take that same step in goal and keep enough pucks in play to get wins.
Philadelphia turned to John Tortorella as its new coach after finishing with the fourth-worst record last year and with just 61 points. Torts is intense and could be worth a few wins but the team is just not good. It enters the year without its best players — Sean Couturier and Ryan Ellis. It is also going to be shuffling players between Philly and Leigh Valley all year, too.
