Series Analysis:
The Lightning came out swinging in game five and stole a do-or-die game to make the series 3-2. The Lightning did exactly what they needed to do on the road, and now the series has shifted back to Tampa Bay. I bet heavily on the Avalanche to close things out in game five and I was completely wrong. There was a ton of pressure around Colorado to close out the series and win the Stanley Cup at home and I think that got to them. Overall they played a solid game, but they didn’t convert on the opportunities that they usually would capitalize on, and that was the difference maker. That being said, Colorado hasn’t lost back-to-back games the entire playoffs and I don’t think it starts now. Although the Lightning have home ice advantage, I think the Avalanche will come out and dominate game six. They are great at making adjustments, and I think they will convert on more of their chances.
On the other hand, the Lightning need Andrei Vasilevskiy to play like himself. Don’t get me wrong, he’s had some great games this playoffs and is a huge reason why they are here right now, but he hasn’t been consistent. This Avalanche team isn’t like any other team the Lightning have played, and they need to have a close to perfect game to get the job done. Although the Lightning have been on one of the craziest runs in NHL history, I think it will end in game six and the Avalanche will become Stanley Cup champions for the first time since 2001.
