The West Virginia Mountaineers will travel to play the Hokies at Virginia Tech this week after a dominant win in Morgantown last week against Towson 65-7. The Hokies are under new coaching, and we’ve seen them struggle in the past couple weeks to get their offense going in games that they were favored to win, but they still boast a 2-1 record with a defense that has been the highlight of the program, allowing just 37 points against through three weeks of play. West Virginia took the win 27-21 last year at home, and they now sit favored by 2.5 points in this week’s road matchup with a record of 1-2, having lost to Pitt and Kansas in games that the defense allowed 86 points combined.

This is a tough matchup to predict, as West Virginia’s defense has been shotty at best and Virginia Tech’s QB Grant Wells threw four interceptions against Old Dominion, their biggest competition and only loss so far this season. While my gut is telling me that West Virginia’s offense showed enough explosiveness to break through Virginia Tech’s dominant defense, the inconsistency through their 1-2 record leaves me scared to take any money-line or spread bets. The play for these teams is betting on the lack of cohesion that both teams have shown. Like I said, Virginia’s defense has been the highlight, but they’ve also been unable to put up more than 27 points through three games. The total line is at 52.5 right now, and that’s a bet that feels significantly safer than me trusting a fart after hammering a large coffee, which I’ve been doing consistently for the past half hour. Take the under in this game, and take your free $200 from BetMGM!
