So Princeton might be full of nerds, but sheesh some of those nerds can hoop. The Tigers finished 21-8 and second in the Ivy League. They’re a top 80 team in scoring, top 62 in three-pointers made per game, and here’s an important one, top 16 in rebounds. While Arizona is one of the best teams offensively, Princeton technically has a better defense and is tied for 73rd in defensive rating compared to Arizona which is tied for 75th. They have 5 players scoring 8 or more points, led by Tosan Evbuomwan and his 15 points a game. I wouldn’t put Arizona on upset alert, but this Princeton team is not bad.
Now Arizona is a top 7 favorite to cut down the nets at the end of the tournament. They’ve been exceptionally good this season finishing 28-6 and most recently winning the PAC-12 tournament. They score the 4th most points per game in the NCAA with 82.7 points but also are incredibly efficient shooting 49.6% from the floor which makes them tied third for the highest field goal percentage. They’re great on the glass, don’t allow too many offensive rebounds, and move the ball better than every team in the NCAA except one. They have a top-20 offense and a top-75 defense making them one of the most well-rounded teams in the tournament. Vegas is all over them for a reason, and I just don’t think it’s anywhere near likely that they drop this first game.
