It doesn’t matter whether or not you’re a man of God, Ron Rivera has elected not to start Carson Wentz, and that’s enough to make a person bow down to their creator and say thank you. Early Wednesday morning, it looked like the Washington Commanders would turn back to Taylor Heinicke to start at quarterback in Sunday’s season finale against the Dallas Cowboys. That thought lasted until Washington head coach Ron Rivera met with the media after Wednesday’s practice, where he told reporters he’s starting former North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell. Against a Cowboys’ defense that struggles against the run (21st in the league), Howell won’t have to do all that much with his arm to keep Washington’s offense afloat. But Howell is no slouch. He threw for 10,283 yards, 92 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions in college. He also recorded 1,009 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns. UNC isn’t the sexiest football school, but as we’ve seen from Brock Purdy in San Francisco, NFL talent comes from weird places. Dallas will most likely rest their starters because the Eagles are heavy favorites to eviscerate the Giants on Sunday. As we saw in December, Dallas’ second-stringers pale in comparison to their starters. Howell is like a kid on prom night with the keys to his Dad’s BMW. There’s a chance this goes horribly wrong, but there’s also a shot that he ends up losing his v-card in the back of a convertible.

The last time these two teams played each other, the Cowboys defeated the Commanders 25-10 in Week 4 with Cooper Rush under center. However, Riverboat Ron Rivera is 36-21 ATS when trying to avenge a loss against a team earlier in the season. And while Rivera most likely won’t be at the helm in Washington next year, he will want to end the season on a high note- regardless of their disappointing loss last week. Plus, who wouldn’t want to sucker punch a Cowboys team gunning for an NFC East title? On paper, Dallas is a more talented team than the Commanders…even the most optimistic Washington fan would tell you that. But, this Commanders team has been surprising people all year, like the time they stormed into Philadelphia and killed the Eagles as 11-point underdogs. Vegas likes the Cowboys -7, but there’s no reason the Commanders can’t keep this more competitive than people think and sneak away with a win. Want a chance to put some money in your pocket for a long weekend getaway? Take the Commanders moneyline and get your extra $200 if the commanders win.
