It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and even though I’m not talking about Christmas, I still have a gift for you from the people over at Sports Illustrated Sportsbook. Marquette looked very solid in their game against Vermont a couple of days ago. They shot over 50% from the field and exactly 50% from the three point line. While their defense looked fine, the offense was their strong suit, and they were able to keep this one out of reach, like when your parents used to hide candy on top of the fridge. It’s been a great season for Marquette. Their impressive resume includes wins over UConn, Creighton, Providence, and Baylor. They finished first in their conference and are on a ten game winning streak. According to the overall rating, they’re one of the best teams on the offensive side of the ball but struggle a bit defensively at times. Four players average at least 11.5 points a game, led by guard Kam Jones who is good for 15.1 a night. Now Michigan State is a solid team, but Marquette is a 2 seed for a reason.
Michigan State has been one of my favorite teams to watch this season. They finished 4th in a very tough Big Ten conference, with impressive wins over teams like Indiana, Maryland, Penn State and Kentucky. Their opening round game against USC went very well as they won by 10, and Joey Hauser dropped 17 points with 8 rebounds. The state is one of the best three point shooting teams in the world as they’re 3rd overall shooting at a 39.4% clip. Overall they’re fairly middle of the pack on both offense and defense, but they do a great job at playing up to their opponents and it seems like they might be getting hot at the right time, like a pre summer glow up. Led by the tandem of Tyson Walker and Joey Hauser, State’s role players have also been stepping up leading to an effective bench which gives Michigan State some depth. I might be a crazy person, but I think the value just might be on Michigan State in this one.
