Man do I love a good ole’ state classic. Michigan versus Michigan State never disappoints no matter what sport you’re watching them play. Now if you’re asking me to pick a winner between these two teams then you are not in luck because they have both been playing lights out this season. But if push truly comes to shove and I have no choice but to pick a winner then I would say give me Izzo’s Michigan State to take home the dub.
Michigan has been playing just as well as Michigan State this season. While they are two spots back from the Spartans they are no less skillful. Hunter Dickinson is an absolute pain beast. He has been scoring 17.7 points, snagging 8.5 boards, and getting 1.7 blocks per game this season. He has been nothing short of absolutely unstoppable for the Wolverines. I will say however, as much as I do like Hunter I can’t say the same for most of the other guys he has been playing with this season. The assist-per-game leader for Michigan is sitting on a measly 3.6 per, which doesn’t bode well for their ball distribution. And their defense besides Hunter’s obvious rim protection has been subpar. But again, this is the battle for Michigan and anything can happen.
Michigan State I do believe has been slightly better. They have some solid wins against ranked teams, and a little bit more distributed talent. Instead of one player trying to backpack the team as far as he can, they can beat you in a multitude of ways. Their guard Tyson Walker is leading the team in both points and steals this season. Forward Joey Hauser has been pulling down the boards. And their top assists-per-game guy A.J. Hoggard has 5.8 assists per game. And if my math is correct 5.8 is greater than 3.6 so that bodes well for ball distribution.
As much as this is anyone’s game I like the Spartans to beat the Wolverines in this rivalry matchup, so bet on Michigan State’s moneyline and get your extra $200 if the Spartans win.
