My Take:

Previously an ACC vs ACC battle, the Hokies trail Maryland in the all-time series 16-15 coming into this bowl game. Both teams enter at 6-6 and a win locks in a winning season, and could be a springboard into an important offseason.

Virginia Tech, in my opinion, may have the right formula for success in this game as its weakness — passing the ball — lines up well against Maryland, which does not defend the ball in the air very well. Starting QB Braxton Burmeister has only thrown four picks all season, but is just completing 55% of his passes for 180 yards per game. Maryland allows nearly 260 yards passing each game and so it could open the field up a little for Tech. The Hokies do run the ball for 190 yards per game which is likely to continue. So… the combination of Maryland not defending the pass plus Tech doing well to protect it with smart throws is a winning formula.

Maryland is also a bit turnover prone when it does pass and Virginia Tech has been ballhawks. Terp quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa has thrown 11 picks on the year (10 of them in the team six losses) and Tech has snagged 10 interceptions on its own, with Jermaine Waller grabbed four by himself.

Neither team is very explosive on offense as Maryland was 75th nationally and Tech being 92nd; so the game could come down to which team makes a costly error… that is more the M.O of the Terps passing game and not Virginia Tech’s.

Regardless, claim your $150 by simply placing a $20 bet on either team!
