This Kansas State football team is something else. While escaping with a one point victory on the road at Iowa State doesn’t exactly scream dominance, great teams figure out ways to win ugly. And while the Big 12 isn’t exactly known for its defense, what the Wildcats did before their bye week confirmed what we already knew- that this defense is special. Kansas State stopped the Cyclones from scoring more effectively than my height stops me when I’m out at bars. Through six games, the Wildcats are allowing opponents to score 16.7 points per game, good for 14th in the nation. Junior defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah leads the nation in sacks (1.08 per game), ranks 14th in forced fumbles (2), and is 21st in tackles for loss (1.3 per game). They put a ton of pressure on opposing quarterbacks, and the Kansas State offensive line blocks well for their own. Adrian Martinez has been the guy that Wildcat fans wanted him to be when he came from Nebraska. In the last three games, Martinez has 998 all-purpose yards and ten touchdowns, and he takes better care of a football than your crazy aunt takes care of her cat- the kid has no turnovers through six games.
With TCU’s win over Oklahoma State last weekend, the Horned Frogs have beaten three ranked opponents in a row for the first time in program history. TCU has an air-raid attack that makes what we did to Japan during WWII look like light work, and over the past two games, they’ve put up an astonishing 81 points with no shortage of big plays. TCU junior wideout Quentin Johnston is climbing up draft boards like he’s on an expedition of Mt. Everest. Johnston recorded 14 catches for 206 yards and a score two weeks ago against Kansas and followed that up with eight catches for 180 yards and a score against Oklahoma State last weekend. His 6-4, 215-pound frame makes him a mismatch against anyone, and he’s clearly quarterback Max Duggan’s favorite target. TCU’s offense is humming like Matthew McConaughey is driving it in a car commercial. The Horned Frogs currently rank first in yards per rush (6.6), third in yards per play (7.3), and fourth in points per game (43.2). So, what about TCU’s defense? This is where things can get ugly for the Frogs. TCU defends the rush decently well behind the efforts of LB Jamoi Hodge. But their passing defense is giving up more yards per game than the number of yards Jared from Subway needs to be away from a school. Apart from blowing out an injured Oklahoma team, every Big-12 game for the Frogs has been a shootout, with the Horned Frogs giving up 275.8 passing yards a game. Vegas likes TCU -3.5, but the combination of Kansas State’s superior defense and Adrian Martinez is too much for the Frogs to handle.
