A mobile quarterback who gets criticized for running too much after panicking in the pocket against a superstar quarterback who was criticized for the same things a few years ago. This is going to be one hell of a game. The Chicago Bears (3-11) will battle the Buffalo Bills (11-3) on Sunday, where the Bears are looking to snap a seven-game losing streak. Since Chicago is gunning for the second pick in the draft, each loss is essentially a win, and each flash Justin Fields show is a reason to be excited for 2023. Chicago fans have adopted this an attitude you rarely see in football- they want to lose; they just don’t want to lose by much. All but four of their 11 losses have been by one score, including against some of the league’s top talent (including last week against the Eagles). This is where things get tricky. The weather conditions are shaping up to make this matchup an interesting one. There’s projected to be a sub-zero wind chill with gusts up to 40 miles per hour. IE, this game will be won on the ground. Both Josh Allen and Justin Fields have mobility, but the Bears have been better at running the football all year than the Bills. In fact, Chicago’s 186.9 rushing yards per game are the most in the NFL. While the Bills are far and away the better team, this game might accidentally be competitive (see the freezing-cold Patriots v. Bills game last year).
But then again, are we really dumb enough to think that Josh Allen will let the first seed in the AFC slip from his fingers? The Bills are 5-2 on the road this season, and both God and the good people of Buffalo know that there’s nobody you’d rather have throwing the ball in freezing-cold temperatures than Josh Allen. As great as the Bears are at running the football, they are inept at defending the run. In fact, opponents are averaging 143.9 rushing yards a game, placing them as the 27th-best rushing defense in the league. Josh Allen has already racked up 705 rushing yards and six touchdowns this year, and you shouldn’t be surprised if he has his biggest game on the ground all season. As much as Justin Fields is known for his athletic ability, the Bills are elite against the run. Buffalo is holding opponents to 106.1 yards per game- good for sixth in the NFL. As surprising as it sounds, Josh Allen may have a better day on the ground than Justin Fields…and we all know who will throw for more yards (no offense, Chicago). The Bears should keep this game competitive because Justin Fields is truly a fantastic talent, but their defense is too depleted to beat Buffalo’s behemoth offense. Vegas likes the Bills -8.5, and while Chicago will cover, the Bills will win. Want to buy your girlfriend something nice to make up for your crappy attempt at a Christmas gift.
