We were all sad to watch Trey Lance’s season end last Sunday. It wasn’t the first time I’ve seen a guy leave the pacific northwest elevated on a cart, and it won’t be the last. Haha. Anybody? Alright then. Luckily for San Francisco, they have the best backup quarterback in the league. Jimmy G went straight back to work, going thirteen of twenty-one for 154 yards and a touchdown. He iced the game with a one-yard sneak late in the fourth quarter. But the most intimidating thing about San Francisco isn’t the homeless people, Kyle Shanahan’s offensive scheme, or Deebo Samuel itself; it’s the 49ers’ defense. Through two weeks, the 49ers are first in passing defense, second in rushing defense, and third in points allowed. The 49ers put quarterbacks under more pressure than an eighth grader getting a vape pen passed to him at a skatepark. Last week alone, San Francisco pressured Seattle on eighteen of thirty-three dropbacks. Their front four has a generated pressure rate of 45%. Nick Bosa has three sacks so far on the year, and he’s showing no sign of slowing down. Much like Donald Trump said, Big Talent!
If only there was an experienced quarterback who is used to avoiding pressure from years of playing behind a defensive line that couldn’t protect a bowl of Lucky Charms from a leprechaun. While his start in Denver has been quite anticlimactic since Broncos Country… let’s ride, Russell Wilson is far from washed up. All things considered, he played a decent game in week one, and he finished strong in week two. It’s natural for a new quarterback to struggle in a new system, and we are seeing a lot of silly mistakes. The Broncos lead the league in penalties…by SEVEN. They also lead the league in delay of game penalties with four, and the offensive line has been about as restless as a dude laying in bed waiting for his girlfriend to “clean up” in the bathroom with six false starts. When those penalties occur in the red zone, yeah…not good. The Broncos’ defense doesn’t get the credit it deserves. They currently sit at the second-best run defense in the NFL, and with Jimmy G at quarterback, the 49ers won’t be able to run their way out of this one. Vegas likes San Francisco -1.5, but the Broncos win this game. Three weeks into a new system, Russ will make the adjustments needed. That’s why you get an elite quarterback in the first place.
