You should really get free therapy for being an Arizona Cardinals fan. Just gambling on the team comes with so many ups and downs that sometimes I catch myself googling is it possible for a football team to be bipolar? Kyler Murray is doing his part in Arizona’s limited success so far. He’s fifty-three of eighty-three for 470 yards and three touchdowns through two games. While the stats don’t jump off the page, the effort does. Last week, Murray scrambled a total of eighty-four yards for one two-point conversion play- it looked like my little brother with ADD playing Madden. On defense, the Cardinals could use some improvement. While they did a great job on third down in the second half of last week, they are still second to last in defensive DVOA (a nerd stat basically telling us that they aren’t playing good defense because, apparently, the eye test isn’t enough). But if anyone can light a fire under these guys, it’s Vance Joseph. For instance, he benched game-saving hero Isaiah Simmons at the start of the game last week. Look how that worked out.
The Rams have a Super Bowl hangover like a group of guys in their mid-twenties at the New Orleans airport. As a team, they have 117 yards rushing, and for some reason, NFL defenses have just now figured out that Matt Stafford’s vision is pretty one-dimensional. You shut down Cooper Kupp and Tyler Higbee, and you win the ball game. Kupp and Higbee have forty-nine of the Rams receiving core’s seventy-six targets. Stafford has a league-leading five interceptions through two games and has put his defense in worse spots than your friend, who always claims he will send you the money right back. On offense, the Rams’ play calling has been so aggressive that one might think Sean McVay listens to Andrew Tate on his way to SoFi stadium. The Rams’ defense hasn’t been bad, but it certainly hasn’t been good. They’ve done a decent job putting pressure on opposing QBs, while also giving up a lot of big plays. Vegas like the Rams -3.5, but the Cardinals will win a tightly contested football game. The Cardinals’ defense has the talent to be in the upper half of the NFL. With the right play calling, they will prove that the first six quarters of football this year were a fluke. Plus, they played the Chiefs, for crying out loud.
