The 8-0 Eagles will host the 4-5 Commanders for a game that could best be summed up as a tale of two seasons. The Commander’s season has been so frustrating up until this point that fans’ faces are turning a perpetual shade of red, posing the question, should they just change the team name back? According to the press, Jeff Bezos and Jay Z will soon make a bid on buying the team. While better with Taylor Heinicke, Washington’s offense is still amongst the worst in the league. The Commanders are averaging 17.7 points per game (#26 in the NFL) off of 4.9 yards per play (#28th in the NFL). The Commanders have managed to score more than 17 points just once in their last seven games. That almost unquestionably will not change against Philadelphia, which boasts the best defense in the NFL. While their offense is more dysfunctional than my Uncle’s last marriage, Washington’s defense is the main reason the Commanders embarked on a three-game win streak and nearly upset Minnesota. Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne are a one-two punch that poses problems for any backfield. Payne leads the team in sacks with 5.5, and Allen is tied for the league lead in tackles for a loss with 14.
The Commanders might have a pretty good defense, but that’s about it. They can get some pressure on an opposing quarterback, but probably not one who can scramble like Jalen Hurts behind the best offensive line in the league. The Eagles are better than Washington in almost every statistical category. To make matters worse, the Commanders are an incredibly undisciplined football team, Washington’s 55.9 penalty yards a game are good for the fifth most in the NFL. Carson Wentz’s Philly homecoming was supposed to be the big storyline for this game – it would’ve been his first time back at Lincoln Financial Field following the trade after the disastrous 2020 season. A broken finger has Wentz sidelined, so sadly, the Eagles, who create more turnovers than almost anyone in football, will be stuck wreaking havoc on Taylor Heinicke. Oh, well. Expect Jalen Hurts to build on his MVP campaign and a big game from the Eagles’ receiver core. All three Batmen should get their fair amount of targets for this game. Washington is 1-3-1 ATS in its last five trips to Philly, and the Eagles are a perfect 4-0 ATS at home this season. The Commanders are also 2-9 straight up in their last 11 games against the Eagles.
